What is a Roadmap?

An interesting comment that came up from one viewer of episode 1:

What is a roadmap? I don’t know if this is useful to me or not.

It's a fair question – whilst many of our audience will know what a roadmap is, we also want to help people who haven't discovered them yet learn about them and get the benefits.

It's a bit of a catch-22, though; part of the discussions on the channel and blog is to answer this question through conversations with experts, practitioners and thought leaders. Regardless we have a few initial high-level answers that might help people decide if they want to know more.

What it is

  • A tool that describes the direction of travel or journey for an organisation, portfolio or product, usually with a degree of visualisation

What is it for

  • To facilitate communication and alignment of everyone about the journey and direction.

What it isn't

  • A plan: stating every step on that journey
  • Fixed: not being open to change

If you use Roadmaps, do you agree with this perspective?  If you don’t use Roadmaps (yet!), does that sound useful in your context?

If so then get in touch with us here or sign-up to our mailing list below.

But we expect to discover things through our discussions that change our views or add nuance as we record more episodes. I can feel a "What is a Roadmap REVISITED?" post coming in a year!
